At the Free People’s Store, the presentation of the merchandise had a sense of discovery. The store fixtures were made from crates found in the trash and the clothing was displayed alongside home items; every piece of product was hand selected and available in limited quantities.
There was a little notepad at the register desk where employees would write down what sold. Since there was no computer system, if something was selling really well it might be difficult to restock. One early employee remembers how popular our vintage denim was.
"We buy the jeans for like 50 cents from some junk dealer. We'd mark them up to a dollar, nobody would buy them because they thought people had died in them. So you mark them up to two bucks and they sold like hotcakes. And that was the beginning of learning merchandise because none of us had degrees in any of this."
