John Emms (1843/44–1912) was an English painter celebrated for his lively depictions of animals, particularly dogs and horses. Born in Blofield, Norfolk, he trained in London. Emms became known for capturing the character and energy of sporting animals—especially foxhounds and terriers—with remarkable skill. Though he suffered a stroke later in life, he continued to paint until shortly before his death. His works remain admired for their vitality, craftsmanship, and affection for his subjects.
