Black q***r writer Roxane Gay to receive award for outstanding service to literature

“It is an honor to recognize Roxane Gay’s extraordinary contributions to the literary community,” said National Book Foundation Board Chair David Steinberger.

Demi Moore slayed last night at the Golden Globes. I was so inspired by her red carpet interview, but her acceptance speech blew me away.

A quote from the red carpet interview while talking about her film, “The Substance” and standards of beauty: “The beauty in this is that we all understand that there has been the circumstances of women being marginalized at a certain age… but for me the most captivating part was really the exploration of the violence and harshness we can have against ourselves. Because that is within our power to shift. How we hold ourselves is everything. I feel like the beauty in my experience in this is also the messages being translating to young people.”

In response to the notion that “once you hit age 50 it stops:” “Just because there’s been a collective agreement, that doesn’t make it the truth. The reality is that this idea has existed, we as women have bought into it. And when we change how we hold ourselves, then I think the world will follow.”
