Why is there a wire "jumping" over my water meter? 🤔💧⚡

Have you ever looked at your water meter and noticed a copper wire clamping onto the pipe on one side, looping over the meter, and clamping onto the other side?

It looks weird, but that little wire (called a bonding jumper) is one of the most important safety devices in your home. Here is why it’s critical:

Your home’s electrical system needs a safe path to the ground to get rid of dangerous stray voltage. Historically, your metal water main was that "highway" to safety.

• However: Your water meter often sits right in the middle of that highway.
• The Catch: Many meters have rubber gaskets or plastic parts inside that stop electricity.
• If you don't have that jumper wire, the meter acts like a broken bridge. The safe path stops right there.
