My heart goes out to all those affected by the horrific events in downtown Austin. This senseless violence has no place in our society. The pain from today’s tragedy will be felt deeply by the families and friends of those killed and injured.

I am aware of rumors circulating regarding the suspect’s residence, possible beliefs, or affiliations. No verified information has been released regarding motive, and speculation only causes further harm. Let me be clear: the actions of an individual do not define an entire faith or community. Every resident deserves to feel safe, and we remain committed to ensuring safety for all.

Out of an abundance of caution, and as we often do following major incidents, we are increasing general patrol presence around community gathering places. These measures are precautionary and intended to provide reassurance, not in response to any specific or credible threat.

I ask that you continue to support one another, stand together against both violence and division, and allow investigators the time they need to complete a thorough review of the facts as we work through the grief of this tragic event.
