ORPHANED BADGERS

We received news from Lisa Owens Viani of Raptors Are The Solution(RATS) and have confirmed that 3 juvenile badgers in the Morro Bay area (San Luis Obispo County) may be coming to Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue for care. Their mother badger was struck and killed by a vehicle

This sad news reminds us to drive more slowly on roads. We are 2 months before normal juvenile dispersal season, June through August.

These 3 cubs are only about 3-1/2 months of age, just beginning to learn to dig and learn skills for survival.

In 2026, let's re-save Paula Lane open space in West Petaluma and re-gain the caretaker and management role - get rid of barbed wire fencing and that awful large brown roadway in habitat, and restore all plantings the City o Petaluma destroyed, so this land in the midst of a wildlife corridor can be accessible, safe and nurturing for the badgers and deer, birds and wildlife who once lived and thrived there.

Thank you for your continuing support.

New badger digs in West Sebastopol, CA in grassland, an apple orchard on a hillside, abundance of gophers.

A video was texted after our phone conversation -- lovely excavated prey mound into an opening to a burrow with several nearby shallower holes.

A badger digs out a gopher mound into a sleeping burrow. Make badgers usually stay in an area for 10 days to 2 weeks, foraging, then sleeping, and then move on.

West Sebastopol is a dispersal area for young badgers from the coast and may serve as part of a badger's range as the badger matures.

The person who phoned was thrilled to have a badger visiting, wanted to know how to best be welcoming, not intrusive.

Last week, 2 photos of a young badger were posted to a Pt. Reyes page in Pt. Reyes, CA. Fortunately, the exact photo location was not included.

P.S. Paula Lane open space in West Petaluma is still in shambles, ruined by the City of Petaluma government.
