FLOOD WATCH:
A Flood Watch remains in effect until 11pm for Erie, Crawford, Warren, McKean, and Ashtabula counties (excluding the lakeshore).

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible this evening. Lingering showers and thunderstorms will continue to move through the area, producing periods of torrential rainfall with rates of 2 inches per hour or more. These intense downpours could quickly overwhelm storm drains and lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Street flooding is possible, and creeks and rivers may also rise.

If you're heading out for the evening commute, be prepared for water-covered roads and possible delays. Never drive through flooded roadways, it only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle away. Plan for the possibility of taking an alternate route if flooding develops.

Stay weather aware and keep an eye on the radar as additional rounds of heavy rain move through this evening.

SUPER TYPHOON BAVI:

Super Typhoon Bavi has rapidly intensified into a powerful Category 5 storm over the weekend, making it the third Category 5 tropical cyclone of 2026. While the Atlantic hurricane season has remained relatively quiet so far, Bavi is posing a significant threat to the Pacific islands.

This powerful system follows Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which caused an estimated $1.5 billion in damage and claimed 17 lives across the region in April, as well as Tropical Cyclone Horacio in February.

Bavi is currently producing sustained winds of 160 mph and is moving west-northwest at 16 mph.

The eye of the storm recently has passed over Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands with estimated peak sustained winds near 180 mph. Typhoon Warnings remain in effect as life-threatening conditions continue across the region.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve over the next few days, but impacts from flooding, dangerous marine conditions, and debris may linger. Check in on family/friends that you know and if you're in the affected areas, continue to follow guidance from local officials and stay safe.

AIR QUALITY:
Extreme heat doesn't just increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, it can also lead to poorer air quality.

Hot, sunny weather speeds up chemical reactions between pollutants in the atmosphere, producing more ground-level ozone (smog). Ozone levels are typically highest during the hot afternoon hours. At the same time, the high pressure systems that often bring heat waves create light winds and stable air, preventing pollutants from dispersing and allowing them to build up near the ground.

Another factor is our increased use of air conditioning. As electricity demand rises during a heat wave, power plants that burn fossil fuels may produce more emissions that contribute to ozone formation.

If you have asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions, be sure to limit strenuous outdoor activity when air quality is poor, especially during the afternoon and early evening. You can check your local air quality before heading outside and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces when possible.

We've been able to stay mostly rain-free through this week's stretch of extreme heat, but showers and thunderstorms will be making a return for the holiday weekend. With all the heat and humidity that's built up over the past several days, it won't take much to spark a pop-up shower or storm.

The good news is that it does not look like a washout, but we also can't forecast a 0% chance of rain for the weekend. Here's how the weekend in shaping up at this point:

🌦️ Friday: Best chance for showers and thunderstorms arrives during the evening.
⛈️ Saturday: A few morning showers are possible, with thunderstorms becoming more likely during the evening, especially inland.
🌧️ Sunday: Scattered showers are possible during the day, with additional thunderstorms developing into the evening.

Keep in mind that the timing will likely shift as we get closer. The amount of energy each round of showers and storms uses can also influence how strong the next round becomes. Stay tuned for updates throughout the weekend, and if you have outdoor holiday plans, be sure to keep an eye on the sky!

🔥HEAT COMPARISON:
Temperatures are climbing into the lower 90s today, with feels-like temperatures soaring into the lower 100s. After just 60 minutes in the sun, a parked car can reach around 133°, asphalt can heat up to around 150°, and concrete sidewalks can climb to around 135°. This kind of heat can quickly become dangerous, so be sure to protect your pets' paws from hot pavement, look before you lock to make sure no child or pet is left behind in a vehicle, stay hydrated, and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning if you'll be spending time outdoors.
