The thunderstorms we experienced over the last couple of days were a good reminder of just how quickly Florida weather can change. We saw heavy rain, strong wind, and plenty of limbs scattered throughout our communities.

A typical afternoon thunderstorm might last 20 or 30 minutes. A hurricane is a completely different test. 🌴 Some good news for Florida… but don’t let your guard down just yet.
Colorado State University’s latest hurricane forecast has lowered its expectations for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. Researchers are now predicting 9 named storms, 4 hurricanes, and 1 major hurricane, which is well below the historical average.

We’re certainly hoping that forecast proves accurate. After the last few hurricane seasons, every Floridian could use a quieter year. That said, it’s important to remember that forecasts describe the entire Atlantic basin, not what will happen in your neighborhood. It only takes one storm, or even one strong summer thunderstorm, to bring down a weakened tree or send a heavy limb crashing onto a roof, fence, or vehicle.

That’s why we always encourage homeowners to think about preparation instead of prediction. If you have dead limbs hanging over your home, trees showing signs of decline, overgrown vegetation, or brush that has been on your to-do list for months, now is still the best time to take care of it. Waiting until a storm is already in the forecast usually means longer wait times, busier crews, and fewer options.

🌳 Have you noticed fewer mature laurel oaks around Volusia and Flagler Counties? There’s a reason. Over the last several years, many of the large laurel oaks that have shaded our neighborhoods for decades have quietly disappeared. While some were simply reaching the end of their lifespan, many others were lost to a disease called laurel wilt.
Laurel wilt is caused by a fungus that’s spread by the tiny redbay ambrosia beetle. Once the fungus enters the tree, it blocks the movement of water and nutrients, causing the canopy to turn brown and the tree to decline much faster than most homeowners expect. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure once a tree becomes infected. One of the most frustrating parts is that many trees look perfectly healthy until the disease is already well established. Homeowners are often surprised by how quickly a tree can go from green to completely brown. That doesn’t mean every oak tree with a few dead branches has laurel wilt. Storm damage, drought, insects, and natural aging can all produce similar symptoms. That’s why it’s important to have a licensed arborist evaluate a tree before assuming the worst. If one of your oaks has started declining, has a thinning canopy, or just doesn’t look like it used to, don’t ignore the warning signs. Catching tree health issues early can help you make informed decisions and, in some cases, protect nearby trees as well.

🌴 If your palm tree starts dying from the top down, it’s already trying to tell you something.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is homeowners assuming a palm tree will “bounce back” if they just give it a little more time.

Unfortunately, many of the diseases that affect Florida palms don’t work that way.

Conditions like Ganoderma Butt Rot and Lethal Bronzing often develop long before the symptoms become obvious. By the time the top of the tree starts turning brown, fronds begin collapsing, or the canopy starts thinning, the problem may already be well advanced.

Not every struggling palm has a disease, though.

Contrary to what a lot of people believe, Spanish moss isn’t actually killing your trees.
We hear this all the time from homeowners. Someone notices a live oak covered in moss, sees a few dead branches, and assumes the moss must be the culprit. In reality, Spanish moss doesn’t pull nutrients from the tree at all. It gets what it needs from the air, rain, and sunlight.
Now, that doesn’t mean it should always be ignored.
When moss gets extremely heavy, it can add weight to limbs and make it harder to spot problems hidden in the canopy. But more often than not, the moss is just along for the ride while something else is affecting the tree’s health.
The next time you drive through Ormond Beach or Palm Coast and see one of those beautiful old oaks draped in Spanish moss, remember that you’re looking at one of the most iconic sights in Florida, not necessarily a tree in trouble.
Of course, if your tree has thinning leaves, dead limbs, visible decay, or just doesn’t look quite right, that’s a different conversation.
