This feels relevant to my world again right now. I told Dallin the other night I feel less and less appropriate for “public consumption” and we laughed and bought some donuts for our kids who are way more free to explore experiment and be in their own ways than I ever felt in my youth.
When I first saw this painting by Raquel Callis she said something about the quiet dignity of this maligned goddess walking in public with snakes in her hair and finally telling the story from her own perspective-
And I burst into sobs and felt her story in my body and brought Medusa home and one day last year this poem broke through me:

Let the Wild Rumpus Start!

Darling-
It was not you,
They turned themselves to stone,
Afraid to see and know their own
Unique
Weird power

Eve exchanged suffering
For knowledge
To let the men
Pass through her portal
Into fear.

It is finished.

When you see
Put your head back on
Put your head back on
And walk into the wild world
That made you
Naked
And see that you can walk
With peaceful
Weirdness
A head full of snakes
And dignity

They turned themselves
To stone
Their judgements have no
Effect
But to hasten their freedom
Either by choosing
Their own weird dance
Or becoming soft by their rotting
In their sepulchers.

Put your head back on
And sing your story
So you can dance
In the fields of flowers
That grow, even now
even now
Through the cracks
Of the stones once laid
By corpses.

The world is then too full
To talk about.
Put your head back on.
Come alive in this mourning-
This morning of resurrection,
And dance
