Sugars in food can come from natural sources or added during processing. Large amounts of added sugars are unhealthy because they lack nutrients and add many calories. The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar to 6% of daily calories. To determine the amount of added sugars in a food, check the nutrition label to see if the percentage of added sugar is less than 6%. Eating too much added sugar long term can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of health problems such as high blood sugar, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiac issues.
