Sometimes it seems like I am talking and no one listens; Sometimes, it seems like I care more about someone’s health and wellbeing, than they care about themselves. I have seen, first hand, the results of people who become poly pharmaceutical junkies. I have seen, first hand, doctors who prescribe medications like they are handing out candy; AND then, the day will come, when you will become so doped up, that you won’t be able to make any decision for yourself, and you will spend the next 5 to 10 years hunched over in a wheelchair, praying that someone—anyone will help you—and no one comes. You’re reduced to nothing more than income in a bed—totally dependent and begging to be heard or seen.
I heard an idea about taking teenagers into jails so they can see what happens when they break the law. I think that every single person should spend just one 8 hour day in an ALF or SNF. See first hand how facilities and our society care for elderly/sick people.
One of my biggest challenges, as a nurse, is caring more about someone than they care about themselves. I have seen the results of “lack of care” and compassion.
