When he was writing The Prince of Tides, Pat originally planned for the character Tom Wingo to win the Clemson–Carolina game for Clemson.

But five of Pat's siblings were proud University of South Carolina alums — several of them joked (or "threatened" according to Pat) that they'd refuse to read, recommend or even allow the book in their homes if Clemson won. 😂

"In an act of complete literary cowardice, I went back to the offending chapter and every time I said 'Clemson,' I wrote down 'South Carolina,' and then reversed the process until [my siblings'] school won the annual contest gone awry."
