We are devastated to hear that Jason Collins, the NBA’s first openly gay player, has died of brain cancer.

Collins publicly came out as gay in 2013 and became an LGBTQ+ trailblazer by not just becoming the first active openly gay player in NBA history, but the first across all four major North American sports leagues.

“My message to other athletes, period, is just be yourself,” Collins said after being signed by the Brooklyn Nets 2014, “Never be afraid or ashamed or have any fear to be your true authentic self.”

Our condolences to everyone who knew and loved him. He will be remembered and missed as an important member of the LGTBQ+ community.
