Over the past two months, we have been helping girls unlock their inner scientist to embrace and change the world through our Small World Initiative Academy Escape Room! Thank you so much to IF/THEN and The American Society for Cell Biology for the incredible support in helping make this project possible.

After getting inspired in the SWI classroom, a group of UNH Manchester students developed an experiment for the International Space Station (ISS). Now, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is sending their experiment to space!

This month, the Small World Initiative® is teaming up with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Sociedad Española de Microbiología (SEM), Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, Perot Museum, and others for its 4th Annual Do Something About Antibiotics Challenge™!

The Challenge invites students to develop their own creative projects to raise awareness about and change behaviors related to superbugs and the growing global antibiotic crisis in their local communities. The timing coincides with the CDC's Annual Antibiotic Awareness Week and global activities from the World Health Organization.

Superbugs are causing a global crisis. According to the United Nations, superbugs are the "greatest and most urgent global risk." If we do not take significant action now, superbugs will become a leading cause of death worldwide by 2050, killing more people than cancer and diabetes combined. We must all do our part and work together to solve the greatest public health emergency of our time.

We are calling on all current and former Small World Initiative students and Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas troops to enter our Challenge to make a difference and win cool prizes! For more information, please visit: www.smallworldinitiative.org/do-something-challenge-2019.

Welcome Pedro Velica to our Advisory Council!

Dr. Velica is a scientist at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where his research focuses on the interplay between the immune system and cancer.

Pedro is also a skilled cartoonist who uses art and humor to make science fun, exciting, and, most importantly, accessible.

He is the author of Pedromics, a humoristic webcomic about science and life in academia but, above all, a repository of cringe-inducing science puns. Aside from the Pedromics social media pages, Pedro’s art can be found in scientific and educational publications and on the cover of both scientific and non-scientific journals.

We look forward to working with him in the fight against superbugs.
