Mexico has issued a travel advisory for people visiting the United States after health officials reported a Cyclospora outbreak linked to gastrointestinal illness. The parasite can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, bloating, fatigue, and weight loss. Some patients have described the diarrhea as severe or explosive, making the infection especially disruptive if left untreated.

Cyclospora infections usually spread through contaminated fresh produce or water rather than direct person to person contact. Fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are eaten raw can carry the parasite if they become contaminated before reaching consumers. Symptoms often appear about one week after exposure and may continue for several weeks without proper medical treatment.

Health authorities recommend washing fresh produce carefully, drinking safe water, practicing good hand hygiene, and seeking medical attention if persistent diarrhea develops after travel. Early diagnosis is important because the infection is treated with specific antibiotics rather than improving on its own in many cases. Travelers should also stay updated on official public health advisories before their trip.
