They’re back!

Students at City-as-School in Manhattan’s West Village are glowing over their excursion to Puerto Rico where they engaged in an educational and cultural exchange with their peers.

The trip was conducted in collaboration with Nuestra Escuela, an alternative community-based high school that fosters leadership, identity and global awareness. The group explored a variety of issues concerning education, personal resilience, social justice, and building bridges across the Caribbean diaspora.

It was an inspirational experience to say the least.

Now, they are working on their presentations, elements of which I’ll share in the days ahead.

OK, everybody. I'm going to do something a little different and share with you the most heartwarming Shark Tank segment I've ever seen.

Not to promote the show, by any means, but to make a point about believing in the potential of our youth--of giving them the opportunity to succeed, to grow, to dream, and to turn their visions into reality.

In the end, Mark Cuban didn't do it for the money, but because HE believed--not only in the product, but in an amazingly successful young lady.

When people ask me why I do what I do, I think about my uncle. He was a classy and dignified gentleman--always neatly dressed, clean-shaven, smelled good, clicked his chewing gum, and was the only one in the family that I knew of who had a car. A big deal.

I was probably around 11 years old or so when he stopped by our Brooklyn apartment one day and took me for a ride to his place, his house in Yonkers. Yeah, that's how he rolled.

All I remember is being awestruck by the bucolic scenery--sunlight peering through fluttering leaves on stately trees that stood as sentinels to the American Dream. From that point on I knew where I wanted to live, how I wanted to live, and felt supremely confident that I could.

That's what one trip can do.

What does joy look like?

These Merrick Academy (Queens, NY) students were having a ball on their trip to Japan earlier this year. Even though the excursion was focused on STEM, there was plenty of time for the kids to chill and enjoy themselves.

Experiences like this jam at a Karaoke club form lasting bonds and heartfelt memories for a lifetime.
