Police Officer John Patwell never imagined that a routine moment beside his patrol car would become the incident that cost him his life. While entering his patrol vehicle at the corner of East Tremont Avenue and Purdy Street in the Bronx, he struck the right side of his head on the car. What initially seemed like a minor accident soon turned tragic. Admitted to St. Francis Hospital the following day, Officer Patwell battled the effects of the injury for 15 days before ultimately succumbing to it. A dedicated member of the New York City Police Department for 15 years, he served with pride in the 43rd Precinct. He was survived by his wife and four children, who were left to carry on his legacy of service and sacrifice.

U.S. Army Specialist Lori Ann Piestewa made history through extraordinary courage and selfless service. A proud member of the Hopi Tribe, she became the first Native American woman in U.S. history to die in combat while serving her country and the first female U.S. Army soldier killed in the Iraq War.
A devoted single mother, Lori enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2001 while raising her two young children—a four-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter. Military service ran deep in her family. She was the daughter of a Vietnam War veteran and the granddaughter of a World War II veteran, carrying forward a proud tradition of service. Even as a teenager, she displayed remarkable leadership, serving in Junior ROTC and earning a command position among her peers.
In 2003, while deployed to Iraq with the 507th Maintenance Company, Specialist Piestewa was critically injured during a convoy ambush and later died from her wounds at just 23 years old. Her sacrifice resonated across the nation, highlighting both her bravery and the contributions of Native American service members throughout U.S. history.
Today, Lori Piestewa is remembered not only as a soldier, but as a loving mother, dedicated daughter, and trailblazer whose legacy continues to inspire generations. Through memorials, scholarships, parks, and community tributes, her name stands as a lasting symbol of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to family, service, and country.
