Service Dog PSA for Businesses 🐕‍🦺🏪

Businesses are not expected to “spot fake service dogs.” That is not their role, and there is no official federal certification or registration required under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

However, businesses do have rights.

Under the ADA, a business may ask a service animal to leave only if:

• The dog is not housebroken
• The dog is out of control, and the handler does not take effective action to correct the behavior

Examples may include:

🐾 Aggressive barking, growling, or lunging
🐾 Jumping on people or wandering away from the handler
🐾 Behavior that poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others
🐾 Urinating or defecating inside the facility

At the same time, businesses must remember that handlers still have protections under the law.

Businesses open to the public may only ask two specific questions to verify a service animal:

1️⃣ “Is the dog required because of a disability?”
2️⃣ “What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?”

They may NOT:

❌ Ask about a person’s disability
❌ Request medical documentation
❌ Demand certification, identification cards, or registration papers
❌ Require the dog to demonstrate its task

Additionally:

✅ The handler must still be allowed to receive goods or services, even if the animal is removed
✅ A service dog cannot be excluded because of allergies, fear of dogs, breed, size, or assumptions

Understanding both the rights of disabled handlers and the rights of businesses helps create safer, more respectful public spaces for everyone. 🐕‍🦺
