Neighbors and Friends,

In Latin America we have a phrase for politicians: “tatuate en la piel lo que prometes” or “tattoo your promises on your skin”. Very often, aspiring elected officials make commitments that they abandon or don’t see through. In 2020, I campaigned on an agenda to increase education spending, build more affordable housing, pass a $15 minimum wage, legalize recreational ma*****na, raise taxes on the 1%, expand access to drivers licenses, and implement an RI Green New Deal. Over the last six years, I’ve secured over $150 million for school construction (check out the new Central Falls High School), supported the creation of a department of housing and the construction of several dozen housing units across Central Falls and Pawtucket, raised the minimum wage to $16/hr (will be $17 in 2027), overseen the growth of the recreational cannabis sector, passed drivers privilege cards for eligible residents, and enacted the Act on Climate. I’ve also done work to make our education funding formula more equitable, passed legislation aimed at preventing wage theft, created a license plate to honor and support remediation of the Blackstone Valley River, and taken the last crucial steps to end the longest state takeover of a public school district in the history of the United States.

While I am very proud of all the work that we have collectively accomplished, I am not naive to the challenges of the moment. The threat posed by the Federal government’s erosion of our social safety net cannot be overstated. We must work to preserve and expand access to healthcare, we must protect our immigrant neighbors, we must lower the cost of childcare, and we must work to make sure that no one goes hungry in the richest country on earth. It is for these reasons along with my continued commitment to my policy priorities that I have decided to stay in this fight and to ask for your support for another term in the General Assembly. Con mucha frecuencia, los candidatos a cargos electos hacen compromisos que luego abandonan o no llegan a cumplir. En 2020, hice campaña con una agenda de aumentar los gastos en educación, construir más viviendas asequibles, aprobar un salario mínimo de $15, legalizar la ma*****na recreativa, aumentar los impuestos al 1% más rico, ampliar el acceso a las licencias de conducir e implementar un «Green New Deal» para Rhode Island. En los últimos seis años, he conseguido más de $150 millones para la construcción de escuelas (¡visiten la nueva Escuela Secundaria de Central Falls!), he apoyado la creación de un departamento de viviendas y la construcción de varias docenas de unidades en Central Falls y Pawtucket; hemos elevado el salario mínimo a $16 por hora (llegará a $17 en 2027); he supervisado el crecimiento del sector del cannabis recreativo; he aprobado las tarjetas de privilegio de conducir para los residentes elegibles; y he promulgado la «Ley sobre el Clima» (Act on Climate). Es por estas razones, sumadas a mi compromiso continuo con mis prioridades políticas, que he decidido mantenerme firme en esta lucha y solicitar su apoyo para un mandato más en la Asamblea General.
