On a day like this, an in*******al group of activists—including academic W.E.B. Du Bois, journalist Ida B. Wells, suffragist Mary White Ovington, and over 50 others—develop the charter for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Formed to combat racial violence using the legal system and peaceful protests, the NAACP will become a crucial force in the emerging civil rights movement.
