The rebirth of one of golf architecture’s greatest lost masterpieces now sits quietly among the sand barrens of Central Wisconsin.

Originally designed by C.B. Macdonald on Long Island in 1917 and painstakingly recreated more than a century later by Tom Doak, Brian Schneider and Peter Flory at Sand Valley, The Lido is unlike anything else in American golf - part museum piece, part architectural experiment and part spiritual experience for those who love the game’s history.

This episode of Signature Golf Courses explores the scale, geometry and atmosphere of the course through a slow cinematic journey across its massive greens complexes, sprawling bunkering and template-inspired holes - from the Alps and Redan to its Eden, Punch Bowl and the famed Channel hole.

From above, The Lido can appear almost abstract. On the ground, it’s disorienting, strategic and endlessly fascinating - a place where every contour, angle and carry is intentional.

What’s the most architecturally fascinating golf course you’ve ever played?

The 18th on Dismal River’s White Course brings together the tremendous scale, glorious setting and rugged character of the Nebraska Sandhills - one of the country’s most underrated golf destinations.

A 500-yard par five that starts high above the property before dropping into a wide fairway and climbing back up toward the green, with expansive views in every direction.

From the tee, everything opens up - including a look across to Jack’s Shack on the far hillside.

A closing hole that puts all of Dismal River’s grandeur on full display.

A fresh release coming at this season… and a hole that leans into classic architecture.

Hole 11 at The Commons stretches to 192 yards from the tips and played 162 during our fall 2025 media day - a longer par three that asks for a committed swing into a unique greens complex on the Peninsula.

At its core is a redan green, angled and sloping inward from the front-right, paired with an Alps-style feature that partially obscures the right side of the putting surface.

Add in water wrapping the left and back edges, and suddenly what looks straightforward off the tee becomes a much more thoughtful and visually deceptive shot.

Designed by in his first solo effort after decades with Coore & Crenshaw, the 12-hole Commons embraces creativity and variety, and the 11th stands out as one of its most memorable moments.

It’s a different kind of experience from the resort’s “big courses” - and that’s exactly the point.
