A big part of getting a stable product, is knowing what emulsifiers to use ! Often a blend is required to get every sensory feel you desire.

Be sure to do your research or you’ll have a separating product. The oil will separate from the water portion of the formula if the right emulsifier blend is not chosen . The higher the HLB the more water loving the emulsifier , the lower the HLB the more oil loving the emulsifier will be . When something is labeled as oil or water loving , it means it can be dissolved or dispersed in either water or oil, it identifies the solubility of the emulsifier.

For example , if I have a low HLB emulsifier, it will allow water soluble ingredients to be dispersed into oils and vice versa. The objective is to mix an oil loving emulsifier with water soluble ingredients and then add it into your oil phase , this allows naturally insoluble ingredients to be emulsified .

A solubilizer is a cosmetic ingredient that helps blend small amounts of oils – usually essential or fragrance oils – into oil in water formulations such as gels, toners and micellar waters. It works on the same principle as an emulsifier by mixing two immiscible ingredients. Usually you blend your essential oil and the natural solubiliser together first in a beaker. Then once blended you mix it with phase A.
