Traditional mortgage underwriting was built around W-2 income — a steady paycheck from a single employer, documented over two years. Here's the part that frustrates me most: if you've written off legitimate business expenses — which is exactly what a smart business owner should do — your taxable income on paper looks lower than what you actually earn. The bank punishes you for doing exactly what you're supposed to do.
