This transformation from builder-grade beige ceramic tile to antique Old Chicago brick is beyond breathtaking. The material sourced for from this custom job came as full bricks from an abandoned building and were taken and cut four ways to create equal pieces with unique and beautiful faces for installation. The pattern we decided on was a soldier course border, offset and varied straight running bond, with contrasting transitions to break up the large room and keep it from looking like a brick road. We also chose to incorporate broken pieces, mixed in strategically to give the old/authentic look of traditional brick installation, where no amount of material would have been wasted.

Because we couldn’t find exactly what we wanted, the grout/mortar selection was a custom mix of two separate colors of authentic brick mortar. The result was similar to a traditional lime mortar, appropriate for soft antique brick. Not too gray, not too tan, not too white or too dark or light. The finished product was sealed multiple times for a durable, waterproof, yet matte finish. We could not be more thrilled with this beautiful outcome.
