When I first moved to Tennessee I would sit around missing Texas a lot. One day I was in a record store, saw this record staring at me and bought it on a whim. Surely I already had it you ask? Somehow in all my years living in central Texas I managed to miss a lot of the best music floating around and seeping through the hot muggy air into the pores of the soul. As soon as I dropped the needle on side 1 I realized this music was going to connect more deeply with me than 99% of music I’d come across in my life. Turned out I was dead on. I’ve been covering that first song for 10 years with all my different bands. All those years in Austin I could have seen Jerry Jeff annually and more but never had an inkling. My buddy Tucker is Bob Livingston’s kid, told me I could have hung out and had Thai food with them anytime I’d a wanted. Oops. I finally did get to see JJ play in his final years - here in Nashville of all places - and it was glorious. Point of this paragraph is: me and 7 or 8 other artists are going to celebrate Jerry Jeff’s birthday tomorrow (Saturday) night at off the row for the second or third time in as many years, and if you’re into that you should come. 7 pm start, with Todd Snider songs seasoning the night’s stew in memoriam to one of JJ’s greatest cohorts and compadres.
