Lubbock Coalition of Black Democrats Raises Concerns Over Ethics Case Delay Involving Councilman Gordon Harris

LUBBOCK, TX — The Lubbock Coalition of Black Democrats has issued a public statement expressing concern over the Texas Ethics Commission’s decision to delay a scheduled hearing involving Lubbock City Councilman Gordon Harris.

According to the Coalition, the hearing, originally set for December 10, 2025, has been postponed until February 11, 2026. Coalition leadership says the delay has created continued uncertainty for residents of District 2, who are awaiting clarity regarding the status and outcome of the ethics review.

In its statement, the Coalition emphasized that prolonged investigations can raise questions among constituents about representation and focus at City Hall, particularly as District 2 faces ongoing concerns related to public safety, neighborhood conditions, and responsiveness from city leadership.

The Coalition also referenced recent community discussions surrounding the reopening of certain local businesses, including CC’s Bar and the Executive Inn, noting that residents have voiced safety related concerns. While the Coalition did not allege wrongdoing by city officials, it called for clearer communication and transparency from municipal leadership regarding enforcement and oversight.

Additionally, the Coalition stated it is aware of reports that Mayor Mark McBrayer has privately encouraged Councilman Harris to consider resignation. The mayor has not publicly confirmed those reports.

Public conversation has also increased around political support connected to Harris’ past campaigns, including individuals who have publicly defended the councilman. The Coalition did not present evidence of improper conduct but raised concerns about perceived political influence and the importance of transparency in local governance.

In closing, the Lubbock Coalition of Black Democrats called on Councilman Harris to directly address public concerns, clarify the status of the ethics matter, and prioritize the needs of District 2 residents. The Coalition stated it will continue monitoring the situation and advocating for accountability and transparency as the process moves forward.

Councilman Harris has not publicly responded to the Coalition’s statement as of publication.

DIGNITY FOR DISTRICT 2 SUSPENDS HARRIS RECALL PETITION

After collecting signatures from across the district, Dignity for District 2 will be suspending our recall petition effort against Lubbock city councilman Gordon Harris today. Although we remain concerned about his votes against our district, his shady associations with developers and big wigs, his disturbing behavior with young girls, and his many displays of public drunkenness, we will let anticipated decisions from the Texas Ethics Commission on numerous violations work it’s will while continuing the work to keep Councilman Harris accountable from the community side and replace him with REAL leadership in the coming months!

We want to thank every citizen in District 2 who signed this petition and shared in this work to keep our city and our elected officials accountable!
