The Weird Space

First, we want say that we are very sorry about what happened at Art Trail and the cancellation of the Drag Show. It is so hard to hear that Art is being stopped because of fear. We have been a safe place in the community for 5 years now. We know what it is like risk your business and more to host drag shows and drag story times. It takes a lot of courage and thick skin to deal with the backlash. Not all people can or should have to handle that.
Second, We had no part in organizing or canceling that show. We did not even attend art trail or know what was going on till afterwards. Our hearts goes out to the brave performers who made the show go on!
Third, we know that a few artist have made a post about us profiting off of the LBGTQ+ community and only doing certain events to make a profit. This may come as a shock but we don’t do it for profit. Most of the time we would pay the queens more than what we made at the event. We have struggled financially, had death threats to us and our family, been vandalized, be disowned by family but have kept hosting these events. We did it so that people could enjoy drag in a safe space. We wanted to create events that people would remember and find some friend or self love.
The most important thing to take away from this is you don’t get a rainbow till after a storm. Tearing us down doesn’t solve the problem of hate in our community. It just adds to it, and as “allies” why take away a chance to stand up for what’s right for your own personal vendetta. You are just hurting someone who is having a hard time and distracting from a true problem.
