Taking a pass on college? California apprenticeships offer another path

What should I do if college isn’t for me? We tackle that question in this installment of our ‘Ask CJN’ column, in which student journalists answer readers’ questions about California higher education. One option for those eschewing college: apprenticeships, which often offer a living wage and a guaranteed job upon completion.

This year AALA is awarding 43 scholarships to comprehensive high school seniors, span school seniors, options school seniors, small school seniors, and community adult schools graduating students. These awards are made possible through the generous donations received by Friends of AALA, our nonprofit corporation. Each student selected will receive a financial stipend to assist with educational pursuits.

Launched in 2018, the SoLa College Scholarship Fund aims to fundamentally transform access to higher education in South Los Angeles. We are not a traditional scholarship based on GPA or sports ability; this is a community oriented scholarship based on personal drive and commitment to making an impact.

The fund has awarded over $1M to our growing community of 135 SoLa Scholars attending and graduating from colleges and universities all around the country with one thing connecting them all - their commitment to seeing the people and communities of South LA grow and thrive.
