Diving deeper into water safety for children with sickle cell disease 05/28/2026

May is National Water Safety Month – a time to raise awareness about the real and preventable risks many families face around water. For children living with sickle cell disease, which almost exclusively affects the African American/Black community, learning to swim safely hasn’t always been accessible. Longstanding safety concerns and limited resources have kept too many kids out of the water. But with the right education and support, that can change.

Programs like The Cigna Group’s Safe Swimming with Sickle Cell are helping break down barriers – giving kids the confidence, skills, and opportunity to safely enjoy the water.
