The top marginal tax rate may have been higher, but as the chart below shows, was rarely above 35%. This is true of most incomes, not just the top [2] .

Wages are not the only way to compensate a worker for labor. Fringe benefits such as healthcare and pension contributions have been rising over the past forty years. Also if you adjust for inflation, workers pay has also risen with productivity [3]
