Mount Kilimanjaro National Park's 5 Climate Zones
1. Cultivation Zone (Lower Slopes)
• Altitude: 2,600 feet to 5,900 feet
• Characteristics: This region receives plenty of rainfall and features fertile volcanic soil. It is heavily farmed by the local Chagga people, who grow coffee, bananas, and other crops. You won't find much wild wildlife here, but it’s lush, green, and warm.
2. Rainforest Zone
• Altitude: 5,900 feet to 9,200 feet
• Characteristics: Warm and humid, this zone is a dense, tropical forest wrapped in mist and blankets of moss. It receives the highest rainfall on the mountain. Keep an eye out for unique flora and wildlife, such as the black-and-white Colobus monkeys.
3. Heath and Moorland Zone
• Altitude: 9,200 feet to13,200 feet
• Characteristics: As you exit the forest, the canopy clears into an open, semi-arid landscape characterized by shrubs, wild grasses, and cooler temperatures. This zone features Kilimanjaro's iconic, prehistoric-looking plants like the Giant Senecios (Dendrosenecio) and Lobelias. The Shira Plateau sits within this zone.
4. Alpine Desert Zone
• Altitude: 13,200 feet to 16,500 feet
• Characteristics: Harsh, dry, and intensely windy, this zone experiences extreme temperature fluctuations—scorching hot under the direct sun by day, and dropping below freezing at night. Little to no vegetation survives here except for hearty mosses and lichens, giving it a desolate, lunar appearance. This is where efficient breathing and pacing become critical due to the thinning air.
5. Arctic Zone (Summit)
• Altitude: Above 16,500 feet to 19,341 feet
• Characteristics: Total alpine desert conditions shift into a freezing arctic wasteland. This zone is characterized by massive glaciers, ice fields, bare rock, and loose scree. Oxygen levels are roughly half of what they are at sea level, and temperatures are consistently below freezing.
