Coming soon to Compound, a solo exhibition by Southern California-based conceptual artist Cole Sternberg. as worldly doubts are cast away is a conversation on our fascination with the sea and a call to how we might honor its powerful draw.⁠
⁠
The multi-disciplinary show includes research conducted at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, as well as Scripps College Archives, in addition to the artist’s own oceanic exploration. Sternberg’s works are inspired by, and created with waterways, as he drags works through the ocean to create their effect.⁠
⁠
“I wanted the ocean to be an active participant or collaborator in the work, by adding its own environmental patterning. In finished form, the paintings deal with a range of concepts – what is the role of humans in the vastness of the ocean and earth, what is biomimicry, and are there true discoveries left in painting? Questioning what new movement and geometry can be discovered, is the earth speaking to us, and so forth.”⁠
