Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has been sentenced to an effective five years in prison by the Kugompo Regional Court following his conviction on firearm-related charges.

The case stems from a 2018 EFF anniversary rally where Malema was seen discharging a rifle in public.
The court handed down a five-year sentence for unlawful possession of a firearm and an additional two years for possession of ammunition, with both terms to run concurrently.

Malema’s legal team has since filed an appeal against the ruling.

The conviction, which carries a sentence exceeding 12 months, could impact his eligibility to serve as a Member of Parliament, pending the outcome of the appeals process.
