When I was growing up and discovering Music… I loved a lot of different music styles and genre’s.
It’s Definitely a fact that I was probably more into Rock, Pop, Classic Rock and some country music.
I remember when I had my first BIG meeting with a Record Label in Nashville. I was probably 29 or 30 years old.
Bob Dole of Lyric Street records sat behind the most giant desk I’d ever seen and I was sweating as I held my guitar in my hands.
I was about to play my music for him and I was praying I wasn’t about to get slaughtered. Lol 😂
That’s what it felt like to me.
He ask me…. Who are you as an Artist!??
I’d never even thought of that question..
I felt sure of myself in what I wrote and created but at that moment, I answered saying…
I’ve got hints of Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, Alison Krauss and Ann Wilson from Heart.
He smiled collectively…and said
I’m m not asking you who you compare yourself to…..🥴
This wasn’t the end of my relationship with Major Bob Music, in fact it lead to many other music opportunities
But I learned who I was vocally and as an artist right then.. as the sweat was soaking my hands and clothing from nerves. 😬

With that all being said
I was constantly being told
Your Too Pop!
Your not country!
Your too pop country!
You need to pick a style and stay in that genre ….!!!🤔
Well I did. I picked one and went more toward country progressive bluegrass.
But I’m at the point in my life where i refuse to settle for one style to make the grade or get other peoples approval.
I love it all. I sing it all and I embrace the fact that every single kind of music I've experienced shaped me and made me who I am!
My point here is:
For New Artist
It’s good to know who you are as an artist and singer… it’s good to understand why you are who you are and embrace that!
Don’t let other people choose your path for you… or their own desires influence your creative style.
I love constructive criticism and I’m appreciative to have had influential music professionals to help me and critique my work because whether I liked it or not.. it made me grow and made me better!! Isn’t that what we all really want anyway?
To be better?
How about this🤩
Aren’t we all just striving to be the best, real, raw, genuine, grounded artist we can be?
Isn’t that the point …. To be true to who we are ?
It’s nice to know when you open up your mouth to let everything inside you pour out.. that’s from your heart and from you completely… that kind of creative form is genuine and it’s not flawed.
