Utah, We Need to Talk About Water.

Hello everyone,

My name is Seth Pierce, CEO and Founder of Waterless Yards, a small family-owned business based in Layton, Utah.

I’m making this post because I believe many people don’t fully realize how serious Utah’s water situation has become.

Utah has always been a desert state. Yet we continue to landscape and consume water as if we live in a region with unlimited supply. The reality is that water is becoming one of the most valuable resources of our lifetime.

The Colorado River system supplies water to millions of people across the western United States. Today, that system is under tremendous stress due to drought, population growth, and decades of overconsumption. Lake Powell, one of the nation’s most important reservoirs, is currently at one of its lowest levels ever recorded for this time of year. Federal agencies are actively releasing water from upstream reservoirs, including Flaming Gorge, in an effort to protect critical water and hydropower operations.

If reservoir levels continue to fall, the consequences go far beyond recreation.

We’re talking about:

• Reduced drinking water supplies
• Increased water restrictions
• Higher utility costs
• Loss of hydroelectric power generation
• Greater environmental damage throughout the Colorado River Basin
• Economic impacts across multiple western states

Federal projections have warned that Lake Powell could approach levels where hydropower generation becomes impossible if drought conditions continue.

The good news?

Every homeowner can be part of the solution.

According to Utah State University, approximately 65% of residential culinary water use in Utah is applied outdoors to landscaping.

That means our yards represent one of the largest opportunities for water conservation.

Water-wise landscaping, also known as xeriscaping, uses drought-tolerant plants, efficient irrigation systems, decorative rock, mulch, and thoughtful design to dramatically reduce water consumption while still creating beautiful outdoor spaces. Utah State University research has shown that conservation programs can reduce outdoor water use by 20–30% or more.

This isn’t about sacrificing beauty.

It’s about building landscapes that make sense for the environment we actually live in.

If we want future generations to enjoy reliable water supplies, affordable utilities, healthy ecosystems, and a thriving Utah, we must start making smarter choices today.

At Waterless Yards, our mission isn’t just landscaping.

Our mission is helping Utah conserve one of its most precious resources.

The choices we make today will determine what Utah looks like tomorrow.

💧 Save Water.
🌎 Protect Our Future.
🏜️ Landscape Smarter.
