7 things you can learn just by watching the test dog.”

Caption:

Most handlers are so focused on their own dog that they miss one of the best learning opportunities of the day—the test dog.

Here are 7 things I always watch for:

1. Where does the dog naturally want to go?
It often reveals suction, terrain influences, and hidden factors.
2. How visible are the falls?
The test dog tells you what your dog is actually seeing.
3. What factors are affecting the marks?
Wind, cover changes, water entries, and terrain become obvious.
4. How is the dog handling the water?
Watch for points, shore-hugging, and water exits.
5. What is the judge’s timing on calling for birds?
Pay attention to the rhythm and pace they are calling birds. Is it a 2, 3 or five second count?
6. Where are dogs likely to get in trouble?
Every test has a danger zone. Find it before your turn.
7. How would I run this setup?
Build your plan before you step to the line.

The test dog isn’t just there to show the setup—it’s giving you a preview of the exam. The handlers who pay attention usually walk to the line with a better plan and more confidence.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned from watching a test dog?
