The more you know… or you know, reaffirming what you already knew. 🤷♂️
Let’s have a serious talk, it’s hot outside… change your filter! Want to know about filtration, read on!
What filter should you use? Our favorite is a Merv 5-8. Why? Unpopular opinion, your filter shouldn’t filter anything more than what is necessary.
The higher the MERV, the more it filters. For example: A Merv 13 filter advertises that it will filter Covid-19 along with other viruses. While that sounds great, it does this by weaving the pleating tighter in the filter. As a direct result this filter gets dirtier quicker. When a filter is dirty, it restricts airflow and results in increased run times and expensive repair costs. In some cases, due to other restrictions in the machine/vents, just putting a higher MERV filter will cause the airflow to deminish and cause failures. As if all of the above wasn’t enough, a higher MERV filter costs more money.
Marketing suggests that the higher MERV filter you have, the better it is and the longer it lasts. This is how filtration manufacturers justify the inflated cost. Our suggestion to consumers is simple, buy a chaeper filter and replace it more often. Here is a simple algorithm for changing your filter:
1” filter = Change monthly
2” filter = Check monthly, change bi monthly
4” filter = Check monthly, change 3-6 months
Let us guess, you are thinking “what happens if I want to filter Covid-19, viruses and don’t want to sacrifice airflow?”. The simple answer, there are devices, such as UV Lights, that are more cost effective and more effective than any store bought filter on the market. Here is the kicker, they won’t sacrifice your airflow.

Let’s talk CARBON MONOXIDE detectors:
The best thing that you can do to protect your family from CO poisoning is to have a detector. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless.
When a furnace fails, it can be catastrophic. It is more rare to have CO emitting from the air supply than one might think. That said, it can happen.
When choosing a CO detector PPM is the number to look for. The detector photographed below is made by a brand named “Kidde” and it will detect CO at 100ppm if exposed for 1 hour. This is not the best detector on the market however it will save your life.
According to the world heath organization, exposure of CO at 30ppm for 1 hour could cause numbness of lips and a slight headache. There are CO detectors that detect at 30ppm if exposed for an hour.
The CO detector used at the time of your furnace checkup is capable of detecting 1ppm instantly. This detector does not prevent your family from a catastrophic failure and in no way voids the necessity of a CO detector in your home however, it does provide us valuable insight on the machines performance. It can help prevent a failing machine from causing headaches.
Furnace tuneups are the best way to ensure your machine is up to code and running efficiently. Additionally tuneups can help improve your quality of life and provide reassurance for the upcoming cold season. Get scheduled today!

Have you scheduled a Furnace Tuneup this season?
Furnace season is here! A furnace tuneup is the only way to ensure your machine is running as efficiently as it should be. It also helps prevent any unexpected break downs.
Below is arguably the most important piece to a furnace tuneup. Pictured is a carbon monoxide detector that is capable of picking up minute levels of CO. This allows our technicians to presumptively catch furnaces that are starting to fail. A tuneup can save your family a headache, literally!
Don’t procrastinate any longer, schedule today!
