Checking your credit score is one of the best ways to ensure it is accurate, but there's a common myth that doing so can hurt your score.
Checking your report (which includes scores) will not harm you at all. The process may not even be visible to potential lenders who pull your credit report.

They may assist you with tasks such as obtaining your credit report, identifying items that can be disputed, contacting credit bureaus and creditors, and representing you in disputes and negotiations. They may assist both with removing inaccurate items and with negotiating the removal of accurate items earlier than they would have normally been removed.

Credit repair services may use a couple of different billing methods. Because removing certain items can take months, some services charge a monthly subscription fee. Others charge a fee per item removed, a billing model known as “pay per delete.”

Appreciating why you might want to work with a credit repair service will be easier if you understand how credit repair works. To get to the heart of what credit repair is and how credit repair companies operate, we went to Dr. Randy Padawer, senior vice president of product with Progrexion.

“Credit repair leverages your legal right to three standards: Credit reports must be 100% accurate, entirely fair, and fully substantiated,” Padawer said. “Too many lesser credit repair companies skip over those last two standards—which involve communicating with your creditors—in favor of depending on simple credit bureau disputes by themselves.”
