Ted didn’t notice it at first.
Luna walked half a step ahead, leash loose, body poised—not relaxed, but calibrated. The air around her felt neutral. Not charged. Not calm. Measured. Like an instrument waiting for interference.
The sidewalk ahead bent in lazy geometry, sun staining the cement with old light. Late October. Dry wind. Familiar route.
Except it wasn’t.
Something shifted.
Not the weather. Not traffic. Not sound.
Input lag.
He blinked, but the blink felt like someone else’s.
Two figures came around the corner.
Not approaching—emerging.�Like memory syncing with real time.
A woman. Middle-aged, loose windbreaker, sunhat too big for her head. She looked upright in the wrong way—like her spine hadn’t recalibrated to vertical yet. Her eyes didn’t track right away.
The dog beside her moved with none of that.
Ruby.
Broad stance. Dense coat. Eyes that pulled light inward instead of reflecting it.
Luna stopped breathing for half a second. Ted felt it like a key slipping in the wrong lock.
Then Ruby saw her.
The shift was mutual, symmetrical.
Two dogs. Two humans. One system locking up.
Luna kept walking. So did Ruby. Their paths converged. No deviation. No recognition on the surface.
Only inside.
Inside was teeth.
Inside was heat.
