Check out this amazing animal rescue from Street Dawgs working with Friends of City of Opelousas Animal Control & Mardi Paws to stop a hoarding situation of 🙀🐾🙀🐾

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Does Anybody Want 100 Great Dane Mix Puppies?
It sounds like a crazy question, but today we saw firsthand just how quickly pet overpopulation can spiral out of control.
Street Dawgs Animal Rescue was called to a property inside the City of Opelousas where there were 11 Great Dane mix puppies—two from a previous litter and nine from a current litter. We also found the mother dog and two unneutered male dogs living on the property.
When we saw the situation, we immediately contacted Joey and the City of Opelousas Animal Control. Joey and his team quickly responded, and together we conducted a complete assessment of every dog on the property.
The owner was given two options: surrender the dogs or allow us to help by making sure every adult dog remaining on the property was spayed or neutered immediately. Once the owner understood that this was the only way to stop the cycle from continuing, he agreed.
That’s when the teamwork really began.
We reached out to Mardi Paws, and as they always do when dogs are in need, they stepped up in a huge way by helping make these surgeries possible. Copper Crowne Veterinary Clinic also jumped in to provide the veterinary care needed to get everything done.
I’m happy to report that every adult dog the owner is keeping has now been spayed or neutered, ensuring this cycle won’t continue on that property.
Now think about this for just a moment.
There were already two generations of puppies living there.
If those nine puppies had grown up and each had litters of 10 to 12 puppies, and then those puppies had litters of their own, we could easily have been looking at well over 100 Great Dane mix puppies in a very short amount of time.
This is exactly why our shelters, rescues, and animal control agencies become overwhelmed.
People ask every day:
“Why is the pound full?”
“Why can’t the rescue take my dog?”
“Why doesn’t someone help?”
The answer is simple. When people don’t spay and neuter their pets, the problem grows faster than any rescue, shelter, or city can keep up with. Organizations like Street Dawgs Animal Rescue end up spending thousands of dollars trying to solve problems that could have been prevented with one surgery.
Street Dawgs Animal Rescue has agreed to take all of the puppies into our adoption program so they can receive the care they need and find loving forever homes.
Today’s success is proof that real change happens when everyone works together.
A huge thank you to Joey and the City of Opelousas Animal Control, Mardi Paws, Copper Crowne Veterinary Clinic, and everyone else who played a part in making today possible.
No one organization can solve pet overpopulation alone. It takes rescues, animal control officers, veterinarians, nonprofit organizations, donors, volunteers, and responsible pet owners all working together toward the same goal.
If you truly want to see fewer homeless animals, fewer full shelters, and fewer dogs suffering on our streets, please get your pets spayed and neutered. Support the organizations doing this work. Donate when you can. Volunteer if you’re able.
Today wasn’t just about saving 11 puppies.
It was about preventing hundreds more from ever being born into a situation where there may not have been enough homes for them.
That’s how we make a real difference—one community, one partnership, and one spay or neuter surgery at a time. 🐾❤️
Got the call yesterday afternoon from Friends of City of Opelousas Animal Control that 3 dogs were getting their chance at a new life through BISSELL Pet Foundation but they needed to be in Baton Rouge for a 7am flight, with arrival time 2 hours prior.
The two golden pups, Rosie & Diesel (now City) are flying to New Hampshire & the sweet black pup, Zeus, is headed for Connecticut.
It was incredible to see the teamwork of volunteers setting up kennels & helping to move close to 120 animals (wish i would have counted the exact number of kennels & animals) & get them secured in the airplane.
Thank you to Race For Life Rescue for the work you guys do. ✈️ 🐾💖
A few weeks back, we had a pre-develoment meeting with the city at Lafayette Consolidated Government.
We just received our next steps from Moliere Chappuis Architects who are working on this project :
* Find a surveyor so we can have the site platted to separate the lot & get our own address, separate from McMillan's Pub.
* Find structural & MEP engineers to generate the drawings for the scopes to get us through permitting with the city.
* Architects, Scott Chappuis & Julien Conover, will be generating a "Builder's Set" for the architectural scope of the project.
We thank everyone for their patience & continued support.
So grateful we were able to help transport Sweet Boo today. We drove her from Friends of City of Opelousas Animal Control to Baton Rouge where we met Bobby Williams who delivered this precious cargo to St Francis Animal Sanctuary & Rescue. She has an incredible story of loss & survival, found as a puppy on the side of the road, her story can be read below. 💖
