Maui Council voted to pass Bill 9 which aims to phase out some Short Term Vacation Rentals on Maui.
To clear the air, there is a lot of misconception and confusion about this bill passing and what it entails (assuming it holds up in court, the lawsuits are coming).
Bill 9 is set to slowly start phasing out some short term vacation rentals in condo complexes currently in apartment zoned complexes.
-As passed, the phase out dates would be Jan. 1, 2029, for West Maui (Lahaina, Kaanapali, Napili, Kapalua)
-Jan. 1, 2031, for the rest of Maui County (mostly Kihei and Wailea).
It does NOT ban all short term vacation rentals on Maui! 🚫
It does NOT ban short term vacation rentals in HOTEL ZONED complexes.🚫
It does NOT not ban short term vacation rentals in legally licensed residential homes.🚫
It DOES have the possibility of eliminating short term vacation rentals in APARTMENT ZONED complexes but the phase out is 3 and 5 years away so you're current vacation plans are safe!
