Let’s talk through your next step.
If I were buying a home in Des Moines today, here are 5 things I would do before unpacking a single box.
1. Give the house a fresh start. Deep clean everything while it is empty. Cabinets, drawers, baseboards, appliances, floors. It is so much easier now than after furniture is in.
2. Secure your investment. Change the locks, reset garage codes, update gate access, and set up a security system or doorbell camera. You never know who may still have access from the previous owner.
3. Learn your home before you need to. Locate the main water shut off, the electrical panel, and the HVAC system. Test outlets, light switches, and appliances so there are no surprises later.
4. Handle the practical stuff first. Transfer utilities, set up wifi, update your address, notify your bank, and confirm mail forwarding is active. Future you will thank present you.
5. Knock out small projects now. Touch up paint, replace fixtures, patch holes, or schedule carpet cleaning while the house is still empty.
Once life starts happening in your new home, those little projects usually get pushed to the bottom of the list.
