Happy 250th birthday to the America I believe in, the one where we meet one another where we’re at, respect that we are free to believe different things, and try to leave the places we visit, people we encounter, and horses we pet a little better than we found them.

A quick note about how this image was created! I dug through my ribbons to find some of the very oldest in my collection (3 blue, 3 red, 3 white), then photographed each individually before arranging the flag in photoshop.

When I arrived well after dark at the farmhouse & horse stable in Rendola after nearly 24 hours of international travel—including a delayed connection in Frankfurt and missing the 6:19 train from Florence I was vaguely instructed to take—I hoped to encounter a gaggle of British ladies of varying middle ages. There’s an inherent risk when booking yourself on a group trip; you just don’t know who you’ll be spending your time with. Instead, I stepped into a quiet dining room to find just one other guest enjoying the remnants of a very late dinner (god, these Europeans).
