The Story Behind Franklin + Charlie Brown

When Franklin walked into Charlie Brown’s world in 1968, it wasn’t just a new character — it was a quiet revolution in a little comic strip.

Franklin was the first Black character ever added to Peanuts. His debut came after a California schoolteacher wrote to creator Charles Schulz during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, urging him to show a Black child simply being a friend — not a lesson, not a storyline, just a kid.

Schulz agreed.

No stereotypes.
No “special episode.”
Just Franklin… talking, playing, learning, and laughing right beside Charlie Brown.

It seems small today, but at that moment?
It pushed back against fear, segregation, and the idea that Black children didn’t belong in everyday American stories.

A little boy in a comic strip became a civil rights statement — without ever raising his voice.

Sometimes representation isn’t loud.
Sometimes it’s a hand extended… and a seat saved at the table.
