Who is that girl behind the mask of divorce? A traumatic event such as divorce brings changes to the meaning, safety, and predictability of the world. I knew this to be true in my own divorce. I had become so beaten down as a result of the process of divorce, I felt as though I had lost the ability to discern and make sound decisions. I didn’t know who I was anymore and quite frankly I am still on that journey of self discovery. One thing I have discovered and I do know for certain is that “me” was always there. Always! She never went anywhere. She did not disappear into the abyss of grief and shame. She was just sitting there in the corner waiting for my best self to re-emerge and stand with her without judgment, directing, or telling her what she needed to do or not do or how in adequate she was. No! As soon as I allowed myself to be with her again it allowed her internal capacity to surface. This is exactly what I do with my clients. My clients offer many opportunities to dig deeper into an area which could benefit from the light being shined on them. Shining a light on areas previously hidden allows my clients to have a greater choice. We all have the Internalcapacity to design our own action plans and be accountable for getting results.
