Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital opened for patients at 8 a.m., June 2, 1989, as a replacement hospital for Jefferson Davis Hospital, which ceased services that same day.

The nine-mile transfer of nearly 200 patients including infants and adults, equipment and staff to the new facility took months of planning and was a historic moment in Houston’s medical history. The move was completed after a day and a half.

For its first year of service, LBJ Hospital was an obstetrical, pediatric and pulmonary specialty hospital. Today, it offers a full range of medical services and is a Level III trauma center, the first such center designated in Texas. LBJ Hospital also carries the distinction for being a regional center for neonatal intensive care for high-risk deliveries and one of the busiest Level III trauma centers in Texas.

LBJ Hospital is staffed by faculty and residents of UTHealth and UT MD Anderson Cancer Center.
