Hello Art Lovers,

As I mentioned last month, TxDOT is demolishing and rebuilding the Alabama Street bridge as part of the larger I-45 expansion project.

The bridge is scheduled to close between Chenevert and St. Emanuel. TxDOT expects the closure to last about nine months.

This bridge is a major route into Third Ward and to The Gite Gallery. Its closure will create an inconvenience for many of you, and it will have a real impact on our business.

During the closure, drivers who normally use Alabama Street will need to take a detour. Eastbound drivers will use Almeda, Cleburne, and Emancipation to get back to Alabama. Westbound drivers will follow the same route in reverse.

I know this will require a little more patience and planning. But small businesses, cultural spaces, and community institutions survive because people make the choice to support them, especially when things get difficult.

During this period, The Gite Gallery will remain open. We will continue hosting events, welcoming visitors, and sharing African art with Houston and beyond.

Please continue to visit the gallery, attend our events, bring your friends, and support the artists whose work fills this space.
