Rear Admiral Pauline M. Hartington, U.S. Navy, John’s aunt, who passed away on July 4, 2019 and was laid to her final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery on October 22, 2020. Pauline joined the Navy as an Ensign after graduating Rhode Island College of Education in 1953. She was the first woman to attend the National War College in D.C., the first woman to work as Secretary to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was commissioned as Rear Admiral in 1981, the second woman in the history of the Navy to rise to that rank. Her last command was leading the U.S. Naval Training Center in Orlando, Florida. In addition to the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, and the Navy Commendation Medal, Rear Admiral Hartington wears the National Defense Service Ribbon with Bronze Star. Pauline lived a good life of 87 years. The photographer, Sandy Schaeffer, captured these lovely images while the family witnessed the ceremony. Much thanks and photo credit goes to them! [email protected] In addition to all of this, she introduced Evelyn and John Boatwright, my in-laws. Oh, and she had dachshunds!
