With compact, cost effective gear, a great show can still be produced. It's not the gear, its the people running it!

When choosing a mic for a live speaking event realize there are different requirements than for podcasting, webinars, or even singing. The first thing to decide is whether or not to go hands free. Handheld mics are easily available, cheap and cheerful for this purpose. There’s just one big problem…..one hand is now occupied….permanently. This can work for some people assuming they don’t need to draw on a whiteboard, operate a computer, or do anything else with there hands while presenting. Very few people can present this way in the real world. However, they do it anyway, and are frustrated by juggling the mic, their PowerPoint remote, product demos, white board markers, etc. It may be cheap but it’s probably not cheerful.
Going hands free eliminates all these problems freeing up both hands and allowing you to use them to express yourself. Remember your verbal presentation is only one part of the whole picture. Your body language and tonality have a lot more impact on how your audience receives you.
The most popular choice to go hands free is a lavalier. Lavaliers are small, unobtrusive, and widely available. There downside is they are more prone to feedback in higher volume situations and, because they are usually clipped on the center of your neckline, when you turn your head to the either side the volume decreases because you are now speaking away from the mic.
Headset mics remove all these disadvantages by effectively mounting a lavalier on a boom that fits over your head and stays the same distance from your mouth regardless of how you turn your head. Common objections are “ I don’t want to look like Madonna, I’m a business speaker!! Well, first of all Madonna has done quite well for herself despite the headsets, and there happens to be a very famous, very tall speaker who is known for his big black headset and who has also done quite well. All kidding aside, head mounted mics are now available in extremely lightweight unobtrusive designs that can go over both ears or a single ear in a variety of skin tones.
In the end it’s about your presentation style, but when you’re ready to remove the microphone as an obstacle to your presentation, you may come to the conclusion that headsets offer the best feature set to allow you to focus on your message and your audience. After all, isn’t that what it’s all about?

One of the best things about Peak Potentials courses is the audience is always involved and doing the work. Johnnie Cass is keeping them busy at Mission Possible.
