Thank you to everyone who joined us this past Wednesday for our Interpreter Practice Session ✨
This month, we focused on listening to and interpreting Black voices. We learned from Afro-Latine speakers, explored Black ASL, and practiced with the words of Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin.
Interpretation is not neutral. It calls for cultural awareness, humility, and deep listening. Honoring Black history also means honoring Black language in all its rhythm, power, and truth.
We’re grateful to be building these skills together in community 🫶🏽

We’re excited to partner with .houston to continue cultivating language justice leaders and strengthening the civic participation across Houston’s multilingual communities. This new training is designed for current interpreters and multilingual community members interested in and available to interpret during USCIS appointments.

Thanks to our partners at the Rice Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication for hosting Tecolotl’s Building Language Justice Workshop! We had a wonderful time with students, faculty, and staff sharing our language histories and reimagining equitable, multilingual community-based work.
